Władysławowo – a fishing port with a new role in the energy transition

For decades, the Port of Władysławowo has been a key center for Polish fisheries and the maritime economy. It is a place that has always lived by the sea – daily work of fishermen, processing, trade, and tourism create a unique rhythm in this town. Today, however, Władysławowo is becoming more than just a fishing port. With the growth of the renewable energy sector, especially offshore wind energy, its significance is increasing as a local operational and logistical support base for offshore projects in the Baltic Sea.

What is offshore wind energy?
Offshore wind energy is a modern technology that generates electricity using wind turbines installed at sea — usually several to even dozens of kilometers from the shore. Due to the steadier and stronger winds over open waters, offshore wind farms are much more efficient than onshore ones. A single offshore turbine can be over 200 meters tall and supply electricity to tens of thousands of households. Electricity generated at sea is transmitted to the land via special cables and then fed into the national grid. Offshore wind energy represents the future — not only because of its efficiency but also because it produces power without greenhouse gas emissions. In the face of climate change, the energy crisis, and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, offshore development is a key element of modern energy policy.

Poland and the Baltic Sea – ideal conditions for offshore development
The Polish part of the Baltic Sea has enormous potential for offshore wind energy development. The Baltic is relatively shallow and calm, which facilitates the construction and operation of wind farms. National plans envisage building farms with a combined capacity exceeding 11 GW by 2040, which will cover a significant part of the country's electricity demand. Alongside this energy transition, there is growing demand for ports and local technical facilities to support the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore turbines.

The role of the Port of Władysławowo – real offshore support
In this context, the Port of Władysławowo is gaining new importance. While it does not change its infrastructure profile, it is increasingly used as an operational base supporting offshore activities — especially in the early stages of projects, smaller maintenance operations, or as a base for technical vessels.

The port can perform various functions in supporting offshore activities, such as:

  • Temporary mooring base for vessels servicing wind farms

  • Rotation and supply of technical crews working at sea

  • Logistical support for smaller cargo and technical equipment

  • Local coordination center for offshore operations, particularly short-term or seasonal ones

This is possible thanks to existing infrastructure, proximity to open sea, and an experienced workforce — maritime professionals who have worked at sea for years and are accustomed to demanding environments.

From fishing port to multifunctional port
The port does not abandon fishing – it remains a fundamental pillar of its operation. However, we observe a clear process of broadening the port’s functions, naturally responding to the changing needs of the region and the country. Władysławowo retains its identity as a fishing port but simultaneously plays an increasingly important role in supporting the offshore sector. It is an example of a place that, without major expansions or modernization, actively participates in the national energy transition — thanks to its location, experience, and operational flexibility.

Benefits for the region
The growing presence of companies connected to offshore wind energy in the port also creates new opportunities for the local community. New contracts arise, increasing demand for port, technical, and transport services. Local companies and workers with maritime experience also benefit. In the longer term, Władysławowo can become a vital link in the Baltic offshore support network — complementing larger handling and service ports.

Summary: a port with tradition and future
The Port of Władysławowo is a place where tradition meets new directions of development. While still focusing on fisheries, it successfully participates in the energy transition, which is crucial for Poland and Europe.

Without large investments or changing its identity, the port shows that it is possible to be part of a modern economy by leveraging what you already have: a good location, experienced people, openness to new challenges, and proven operational procedures.

Władysławowo – a port with history that actively supports the future.
